Luke 2:8-10 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. (9) And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. (10) And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
Luke 2:11-14 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (12) And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” (13) And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, (14) “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
The perfect day.
“For unto you is born this day…”
Colossians 1:16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
The perfect gift.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
“…a Savior…” – To take away our guilt and sin.
Matthew 1:21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
“…who is Christ… ” – to fulfill our hopes.
2 Corinthians 1:20 For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.
“…the Lord…” – to defeat all our enemies.
Isaiah 9:6-7 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (7) Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.
The birth announcement.
Luke 2:12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”
FYI… One angel could deliver the announcement of Jesus’ birth, but the response of the announcement demands an army of angels.
Luke 2:13-14 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, (14) “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
God’s glory and our peace
His glory – our peace
His greatness – our joy
His majesty – our benefit
God’s peace is offered to the world. But only the “sons of peace” receive true peace.
Luke 10:5-6 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ (6) And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you.
God’s purpose is to give you peace (not the absence of conflict) by being the most glorious Person in your life.
Key truth: A heart yielded to continually show the glory of God will know the peace of God.
Peace with God
Romans 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Peace with ourselves
Philippians 4:6-7 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (7) And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Peace with others
Romans 12:18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
